The first science observations by GOLD took place on October 5 (day 278).  NI1 (nighttime disk scans) began at 2010 UTC using only Channel B, alternating hemispheres.  At 2310 UTC, Channel A began Northern Hemisphere scans while Channel B continued scanning only the Southern Hemisphere.  This was the standard NI1 scan sequence for each day until December 17.
